It
has been generally agreed that Thailand is in the process of technological
and industrial development and needs a large number of qualified
professionals in several fields of engineering including computer
engineering. Managers are then required to manage the engineers
and engineering activities. These managers were earlier drawn from
holders of either engineering degrees or holders of Master of Business
Administration (MBA) degrees. However, neither of these two classes
of managers are the most suitable for the task. The engineers need
more management training. The MBA's need more computer and engineering
training. Therefore, a relatively newer program than the MBA, called
Engineering Management (EM), was established at more than a hundred
universities in the United States as a special MBA program for engineering
activities. The list of US universities offering EM program includes
Stanford University, MIT, and North Western. The Master's program
in the US requires only 36 credits but a good Master's program in
Thailand requires 48 credits. Therefore, 18 credits of computer-related
courses were added to the 36-credit US EM program, enriching it
into a 48-credit Computer and Engineering Management (CEM) program.
In addition
to being based on the program well established in the United States
of America, the Master of Science in Computer and Engineering
Management, MS(CEM), program at Assumption University has been
approved by both the Ministry of University Affairs and the Civil
Service Commission of Thailand. The program will contribute to
the national and social development of Thailand as well as other
countries by producing qualified personnel to serve ultimately
in a managerial or executive level in industrial and government
establishments relating to or encompassing computer and engineering
activities.
